The Power of a Vision Board

Who is that in the Mirror?

Inspired by Jack Canfield's book, The Success Principles, I decided to take a good long look in the mirror. At the time I was shocked to realize that I didn't even recognize the person looking back at me.

This simple exercise is an extremely powerful way to get back in touch with or even discover for the first time, your true Vision for Yourself.

What do you see when you take a good look at your life?

What do you want to see?

What do you want to DO, BE or HAVE within the next 2-12 months that you don't have today?

Pick the first thing that pops into your mind. Everyone wants to improve something about their current physical, mental or emotional state of being.

If we're not growing toward something then we are receding away from it. There's really no such thing as 'status quo'.

What Pumps You Up?

You can focus on just one thing or many, it's up to you. Whatever it is, make sure it makes your heart go pitter-patter just to think of it.

Write it down!

Too many people skip this step - it's critical. Write it down in the present tense, as if it's already a reality.

EXAMPLES:

I love how great my new clothes look on me, now that I weigh 143!

(I like that one because it rhymes).

I am so grateful for this new position that provides me with more money, recognition and the opportunity to 'strut my stuff'!

I am ecstatic to have my credit card balance of _____, paid in full by May 15th at 5:00pm.

Get Ready to Play!

Now it's time to get really involved with your vision for yourself. It requires some doing.

This little exercise is designed to get you visually and physically involved with your goal. If you haven't done this before, it may feel silly. You may think it's a waste of time. I promise you - it is a vital step in getting you fully connected to your vision.

And... it's fun!

Reading is Great * writing is Better * physically creating your vision is Superior!

Let's Get Physical...

Gather your favorite magazines, a pair of scissors, glue stick, and a piece of poster board. It doesn't have to be huge, even an 8 ½ x 11 piece of printer paper will be fine.

While you are thinking about the statement(s) you wrote for yourself, thumb through the magazines and rip out the pages that have images that resonate with your goal or vision.

EXAMPLE:

If you used an extra $10,000/per month in your statement, look for visuals of what you will do with that extra money.

Want to pay off your kid's college tuition (or your own student loan?). Find a picture of the college from a brochure or online, put it on your vision board and write Paid in Full across it.

Buy a couple of magazines if you have to, to get the pictures you want of an exotic vacation or remodeled kitchen.

Also add some actual pictures of money - even write yourself a check for $10,000. - date it for the target date you have chosen to receive this amount by, and glue it to your board!

Some people may actually feel uncomfortable with this process; some of you will go crazy and have a blast. Although it may not appear to be relevant with regards to earning money, it is a necessary step toward training your brain to get involved with possibility, abundance and receiving.

DO NOT EDIT – DO NOT EDIT – DO NOT EDIT!

If a picture of a Rolls Royce appeals to you - slap that photo on your board. Do not skip over it because you 'think' it's out of the realm of possibility or "who needs that anyway"?

This process will free your subconscious mind to RECEIVE the good that you desire. When we have been existing in a state of lack and limiting beliefs for so long - it takes sustained visualization and practice to create the belief of wealth and abundance.

These exercises are designed to get you emotionally involved with the good that you desire. You will begin to feel and act as if you are already in possession of the goods and freedom from debt that you are visualizing.

I have my vision board (some call it a mind-map) on the wall next to my desk. If you are shy and don't want other people looking at your board (yet) then fold it up to fit into a notebook.

Read your vision statements twice a day and take the time to gaze at your vision board. Really get involved with what you are looking at. YOU created those images for yourself.

When you feel your heart go pitter-patter at the thought of actually having, doing or giving that feeling to others - then you know you've hit the right vibration necessary to attract those things to you.

Let's Get Physical!

I started a vision board ten years ago, but I have edited it... bigger and better! Vision boards really do help you get the images and feelings deep down inside, to work for you, to lift you up, and to get you refocused when pulled in multiple directions.

My board is also in keeping with a couple of my favorite scriptures: "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to bless you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future..." and (with doing my part, my heart)... "I will open the floodgates of Heaven and pour out a blessing so great you cannot contain it"... Blessings, like blood in our veins with life-giving flow, but with OVERflowing abundance to give and give to others... Boy, it's fun depicting the excitement and joy of THAT!!!

Wow what an inspirational hub! I've heard all about vision boards but you ellequently put it in plain english for people.. thats awesom..! as far as success goes I'd also say go see pirates of silicone valley (a tnt special you can find by googling "pirates of silicone valley movie" I just watched it for the 20th time lol, it shows how your vision can come to life if you just don't let those so called obsticles get in your way! (its the story of bill gates/microsoft and steve jobs/apple) and is very entertaining. Great hub I think I need to make one of these too..

I love that book, I read the secret first, watched "What the Bleep" and moved onto Jack Canfield. I have a library of books now and each one of them gave me the recipe for my success to help me build a new vision board and reach my goals.

This is a great Hub. So many of us have incredible visions of what we both want and like, multiple visions even. But keeping track of those visions and staying focused on them is not an easy task. Vision boards are in a way like a time capsule. They remid us of who we are and who we were. They keep us focused and remid us of the end objective. Great work

Hi Mind-ing,

Good Hub, Good article!

I did a lot of these things that you describe about two years ago. A lot of things came to pass. The key as you highlight, is the feeling and emotional connection to the vision.

I must say that I have fallen out of doing these excercises regularly...

At that time I had been writing things down daily and as I remember now many of the visions seemed impossible but they all came to pass.

I see that you mention mindmaps. A program that I really like, which is free for 30 days and in it's basic version always free, can be had at thebrain.com.

I love it.

Best,

George

Giving thanks... Love it. I used to think that I couldn't be satisfied with my current situation, because that would inhibit my motivation to go after those big goals. you are right. It is just the opposite. Gratitude of what you already have makes a big difference...

Schelli,

Thank you for your comments on my article, they are appreciated as is your article here. You've provided excellent info for those who are not familiar with the concept/practice and thoughtful reminders for those of us who are familiar.

I visited your blog, too. Great stuff and your videos are nicely done.

We have a lot of common interests. I saw on your site that the first movie you list is "What the Bleep". If you have a chance to view "WTB Down the Rabbit Hole" it has expanded versions of the movie with many more interviews and even more interviews on the flip sides which I think you and others of similar mind will find fascinating.

Also, since you liked "The Secret" you may also like "The Magic of Believing" by Claude M. Bristol (1891-1951) - Published 1948. It is very similar to "The Secret" but much better. It is the book that Phyllis Diller credits with changing her life.

I have an evolving Web book I'm writing at www.primaryreality.com that you may find interesting as well. (evolving because as my ideas and concepts evolve I make changes to my book - one can't do that in print!)

I've found the coolest and most effective tool to help with the visualization process - a great vision board software called Mind Movies Creator. It was created by Ryan Higgins to help others visualize and manifest the life of their dreams. See a video and find out why here http://www.squidoo.com/vision-board-software A Mind Movie allows you to create a vision of what you want, together with your Favorite song… the one that makes you feel good, the one that makes you want to dance, the one that makes you smile and sing along. It’s like a 3 minute slide show/movie of your perfect life. I’m trying it out now. I’m having fun making my own vision board/mind movie. And because it’s a software, no need to cut up magazines! Thanks. Eric

I read these wonderful positive posts regarding the successes of the vision board but what I don't see is "how long" did each of your visions/goals/dreams take to come to fruition or pan out the way you want it to exactly on your vision board. I'm very apprehensive of trying to make one of these vision board for fear that my dreams big or small will not pan out or it just will take months even years for anything to manifest for me.

Plus are there affirmations, mantras, chants to reinforce this vision board to work faster??? Read the secret but it didn't resonate with me as to giving a method or a sure fire formula for this vision board to work well.

Any comments/reply backs deeply appreciated. Thank you.
